There would have to be on obsession with 'the landscape', you know, the locations we can all relate to; wide open vistas, the unforgiving Outback, present nowhere else in the world but present everywhere in films like The Overlanders (Watt, 1946), Sunday Too Far Away (Hannam, 1975) and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (it's own title perhaps paying homage to that early Aussie classic The Adventures of Barry McKenzie(Beresford, 1972)). These uncompromising environs produce the hardiest of men. Men who need a pot of beer in the pub after a day done battling the forces of nature. His is not a myth of triumph, it is a story of survival. It goes without saying that he has a hare lip.
